Simon Brooke Event 2023 – Youth Housing: International Best Practice
21st Aug, 2023

Simon Brooke was a longstanding advocate of social and affordable housing in Ireland. His passion for the sector and for the provision of high-quality, affordable, secure homes for individuals and families across the country was reflected in his work over many decades.

Up until his untimely death in November 2019, Simon worked tirelessly to break the stigmas attached to social housing and to ensure that everyone in Ireland had a great place to live. Simon first supported Clúid as a board member and later became Clúid’s Head of Policy. In his various roles, Simon was a passionate supporter of the exchange of international best practice and policy in housing.

It is on this basis that the inaugural Simon Brooke Lecture was established three years ago, celebrating Simon and acting as a springboard for housing policy discussions. The first lecture, which was held online in 2021, focused on learning from international housing policy. Last year’s event in 2022, focused on the intersection between domestic violence and housing in Ireland.

The topic for this year’s lecture is youth housing. As part of Clúid’s new corporate strategy, Securing the Future 2023-2025, we have committed to investigating the possibility of providing a number of new tenures including age-friendly housing for young people. Work is well underway in this area. So far in 2023, we have hosted a consultation event with our colleagues in the housing and youth services sectors to get a sense of what is needed for Clúid to offer affordable and sustainable, youth housing.

Internally, we have set-up a Youth Housing Working Group which brings together members of Clúid staff from different departments to discuss the challenges and opportunities provided by youth housing. We have also become official members of the Coalition to End Youth Homelessness.

The two themes running through this year’s event are international best practice in youth housing and partnerships needed to deliver youth housing in Ireland. We are delighted to welcome representatives from Rocktrust & Almond Housing Association (Scotland), NAL (Finland), and Hogar Sí (Spain). We will also be sharing input from a number of other leading experts and organisations from abroad via video.

The Simon Brooke Lecture takes place on Wednesday, 27th September in the Lighthouse Cinema, Smithfield, Dublin at 5 p.m. Tickets are free of charge and must be reserved online through Eventbrite.

Please note that there will be a videographer and a photographer at this event. If you would prefer not be videoed or photographed, please inform a member of Clúid staff at the event.
